The Ga Homowo festival celebrated annually among other things bring the indigens together,to reaffirm their spiritual values, strengthen the social bonds that bind them and their commitment to the Ga community came off last Saturday.
However, the usual pomp and pageantry that go with some aspects of the celebration was absent because of the death of the Ga Mantse Nii Amugi II whose death was announced recently and is yet to be buried.
According to official traditional sources, the low key celebration was in honour of the dead royal. Therefore the usual sprinkling of kpokpee which is accompanied by the firing of musketry and drumming was not done.
The sprinkling was done in mostly the traditional houses and family houses so that the ancestors, animals and even insects may partake of the festival meal.
Those who normally patronise the twins festival, among them tourists, witnessed the event at two main venues,Korle Wokon and Korle Gonno, all suburbs of Accra the previous day.
The event which now has some additions especially by some of the youth who are considered rascals by many onlookers due to modernity, in no way affected the real objective of the twins festival which was held to celebrate the lives of twins.
Across the Ga Mashie area a number of entertainment activities were held to commemorate the festival. They included an evening at the Osekan Beach off the High Street in Accra where the Sakumo Band performed for a large crowd who danced throughout the night.
At the Papillon a pub at Korle Gonno, another crowd danced to the music of the Wulomei and later to loud music from powerful sound systems which they danced to till the wee hours of the morning.
Havana, another pub at Korle Wokon was jam packed spilling its large crowd onto the streets around the area making vehicular movement impossible. The crowd, most standing for lack of chairs, danced to recorded music from hiplife and other popular artistes.
