On Saturday 7th August, 2004 Ghana's Olympic football team, the Black Meteors recorded an impressive 3-1 win over the 2004 UEFA Champions League winners, FC Porto.

The game formed part of the Olympic football team's build up for the Athens games in 2004.

FC Porto playing with a second string side, scored the first goal in the 10th minute but the Ghanaian side rallied back with three goals that unsettled the European and Portuguese league champions.

The Black Meteors scored the three goals through Asamoah Gyan, then playing for Udinese, Emmanuel Pappoe and Kwadwo Poku, who was at the time plying his trade in Denmark for FC Midtjyland.

Jose Mourinho was the coach who masterminded FC Porto's champions league victory, but he had joined Chelsea FC during this encounter.

The Portuguese side failed to convert a penalty kick, which was saved by Mohammed Alhassan in post for Ghana

The Black Meteors per the results of that game went unbeaten in five matches, prior to the start of the tournament.

However, they failed to qualify from a group which had Italy, Paraguay and Japan, despite an impressive start in the tournament: drew against Italy, defeated Paraguay, before Japan who were on their way out of the tournament piped Ghana to exit with them from the tournament.
