TUE, 14 JUL 2026

Cabinet has concluded its deliberations on the Government’s Position Paper on the report of the Constitution Review Committee, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing constitutional reform process.

The conclusion of the discussions clears the way for the government to formally announce its position on the Committee’s recommendations and outline the next phase of the review process.

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, is expected to publish the Government’s Position Paper next week and hold a detailed briefing to explain the government’s decisions and the way forward.

The Constitution Review Committee made several far-reaching recommendations, including extending the presidential term of office from four years to five years.

Other major proposals include separating the roles of ministers and Members of Parliament by ending the practice of appointing MPs as ministers, establishing an independent Emoluments Commission to determine the remuneration of public office holders, and reforming the process for appointing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

The publication of the government's position is expected to provide greater clarity on which of the recommendations it intends to adopt as part of the broader constitutional reform agenda.
