The Sra Langmasi Royals and Kingmakers of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area have appealed to Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to recuse himself from matters relating to the ongoing Yilo Krobo Paramountcy chieftaincy dispute.

Addressing a press conference in Somanya in the Eastern Region, Mr Dawutey Noah Tetteh, Stool Father (Setse) of the Yilo Krobo Paramountcy, said the appeal was intended to safeguard public confidence in the judicial process amid ongoing litigation involving the Yilo Krobo Paramount Chief.

The appeal is linked to a case pending before the Supreme Court concerning the contempt conviction of Nene Oklepemeh Nuer Anorbah Sasraku II, Paramount Chief of Yilo Krobo.

Mr Tetteh said the Koforidua High Court in 2025 convicted Nene Sasraku II for contempt of court and sentenced him to four days’ imprisonment.

He said the execution of the sentence was subsequently stayed following an application filed at the Supreme Court pending the determination of an appeal.

According to him, the Supreme Court was scheduled to hear the matter on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

Mr Tetteh alleged that comments attributed to persons sympathetic to the Paramount Chief had raised concerns among members of the Sra Langmasi Royal Family regarding the proceedings.

“Supporters of Nene Oklepemeh Nuer Anorbah Sasraku II are already jubilating and claiming that they have won the case,” he said.

He acknowledged that the claims had not been independently verified but noted that they had heightened apprehension among the Royals.

“For peace to prevail, we are pleading with the Chief Justice to remove himself from traditional issues involving Yilo Krobo,” Mr Tetteh said.

Mr Tetteh said the Royals believed allowing the legal process to proceed in a manner that inspired public confidence would strengthen trust in the judiciary.

He further reiterated that the position of the Sra Langmasi Royals that Nene Oklepemeh Nuer Anorbah Sasraku II was not installed in accordance with the customs and traditions of the Yilo Krobo people.

Mr Tetteh explained that as Stool Father responsible for performing the customary rites associated with the installation of a Paramount Chief, he had not performed such rites for Nene Sasraku II.

He added that the Royals remained committed to due process and would respect the eventual outcome of the Supreme Court proceedings.

“As the Setse of the stool, nobody brought him to me to install him as a Paramount Chief. No rites were performed for him according to our customs,” he alleged.

He said the Royals believed the dispute should be resolved through the appropriate traditional and legal processes.

The Yilo Krobo Paramountcy chieftaincy dispute has persisted for several years, with competing factions disagreeing over issues relating to the legitimacy and recognition of the Paramount Chief.

Meanwhile, the Sra Langmasi Royals insist that their call for the Chief Justice to recuse himself is intended solely to protect confidence in the judicial process.
