This article looks back at the beginning of the 2013/14 season and lists the players who stood out in Ghana Premier League.
Coach: Mas-Ud Didi Dramani
Formation: 3-5-2
Goalkeeper: Stephen Adams
The Aduana Stars shot stopper, who is in his fifth season at the club, has been behind the fine form of the Dormaa based club in the Premier League. The 24-year-old has also helped the Local Black Stars to triumph in the WAFU Championship, early December. Adams earned his first call-up for The Black Stars on 13 May 2010 for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Defender: Godfred Saka (Aduana Stars)
Although injuries have often stalled Saka's career this term, the Aduana Stars defender is a top-quality right-back. When fit and in good form, he has proven to be a reliable and dependable player. While he is strong at the back, Saka has shown a willingness to get forward as well. He provides good delivery from the flank and shows good composure on the ball.
Defender: Kwabena Edusei (Asante Kotoko)
A rock at the heart of Kotoko's title-winning defence, this was the year in which Edusei will finally be named among one of the best centre halves in the Ghana Premier League. Fierce, committed and driven, Edusei is a leader in the purest sense, and capped a fine season by helping his nation lift the WAFU Cup on home soil.
Defender: Rubin Gnagne (Hearts of Oak)
The Ivorien international is a class act who plays an important role for Hearts of Oak. The defender has added an attacking regime to his game, contributing offensively as well as defensively. This certainly plays a role in his placing on this list. Defensively, Hearts will need to improve in order to challenge Kotoko for the GPL title, particularly with Ashgold looking so sublime. With Gnagne in their ranks, you can be optimistic that the Phobians will be tightening that rearguard before the season's close.
Midfielders
Michael Akuffu (Asante Kotoko)
The Asante Kotoko man has the eye for a special pass, and his intricate play allows him to dart between defenders like they aren't even there. Akuffu is undoubtedly one of the best all round midfielders at the moment playing in Ghana. The ex-Feteh Feyernoord talisman has always played in important games for Kotoko, and never fails to deliver a solid performance for his team.
Moro Abubakar (Hearts of Oak)
Abubakar is the heartbeat of the Phobians midfield, his defending, passing and has all the attributes to be amongst the best players at the position. Although small in stature, the Hearts midfielder plays a physical, tough-tackling style of football.
Asiedu Attobrah (New Edubiase)
The ex-Zaytouna man has bags of talent, and has been linked with a move to Kotoko in the last transfer window, however he vowed to stay at Edubiase. Attobrah has always been a talent, and delivers that special something when his team needs him. Attobrah has assisted every single goal scored by his team this season.
Theophilus Anobaah (Medeama SC)
Things are looking fairly bleak at Tarkwa. As well as trailing Asante Kotoko by twelve points in the Ghana Premier League, Medeama have the added indignity of seeing clubs like Hearts, Ashantigold, Heart of Lions and regional rivals Hasaacas above them on the league table. However, the quick integration of versatile midfielder Anobaah into the side is one of the few bright spots so far for the 2012/13 FA Cup champions.
Jordan Opoku (Asante Kotoko)
Many may have thought that Jordan Opoku's career was winding down when, in 2011, he announced his decision to leave Kotoko for Berekum Chelsea. However, the central midfielder has proven that he still had some gas left in the tank after he rejoined the Porcupine Warriors this season. He has shown series of brilliant performances for Kotoko to maintain the top-spot on the league table and has assisted five goals already this season.
Attackers
Yahaya Mohammed (Asante Kotoko)
The Asante Kotoko star is one of the best all round players in Ghana football. The former Nice man can play as an attacking and defensive midfielder with ease. He is capable of setting the tempo of a game with his impressive passing repertoire, he can also shoot from distance and is considered one of the leaders when playing on the pitch. Yahaya Mohammed is tigerish in his tackles and scores his fair share of goals in a more attacking role than he was previously accustomed to.
Seidu Bancey (Asante Kotoko)
He is one of the most underrated footballers in the Ghana Premier League. The back-to-form Asante Kotoko striker earned a late call-up to the local Black Stars that is preparing for next year's African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa. The 23-year-old missed close to half of the first round games in the 2013/14 Ghana Premier League to injury, but has scored an impressive 7 goals in eight games for Kotoko to top the scorers' chart.
