Elmina Sharks have pledged to continue paying goalkeeper William John Donkoh for the remaining two years of his contract after he lost his left leg in a motor accident in Cape Coast.
The Division One League club confirmed in a statement on Thursday, 22 October, that Donkoh was involved in an accident on Tuesday, 20 October, and sustained severe injuries to his left leg.
He underwent surgery on Wednesday night, but doctors were unable to save the limb despite their efforts.
Speaking to Citi Sports, the club’s public relations officer, Kingsley Smith Arthur, described the incident as a major blow and assured the goalkeeper of the club’s continued support.
“William’s issue comes as a surprise and a huge blow to the club. It is hard to take as a club, but regardless of how hard it is, we are committed to supporting William to recover fully from the devastating accident he encountered on Tuesday,” Arthur said.
He added that the decision to continue paying Donkoh’s salary was in line with the two-year contract he signed at the beginning of the season.
“As a club, we are committed to the contract as our first asset. The leadership of the club has resolved that we will commit to paying William's salary for the contract, which is two years. We just got William signed this window,” he said.
Arthur also assured that the club would provide further assistance to help the goalkeeper rebuild his life following the accident.
“We will still try and support in any way we can as a club to help reshape and rebuild William to the very best possible he needs to get to,” he added.
Donkoh joined Elmina Sharks during the recent transfer window and had made just two appearances for the club before the accident.
