Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Julius Kwame Anthony, has urged the party's Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, to step up her performance following Sarah Adwoa Safo's decision to contest the seat again.
He said the former lawmaker's return bid should push the incumbent MP to intensify her development efforts and demonstrate why she deserves to retain the constituency in the 2028 general elections.
Kwame Anthony made the comments in a social media post on Friday, October 23, following reports of Ms Adwoa Safo's intention to seek the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) parliamentary candidacy again.
“I am happy for the Dome-Kwabenya people following Adwoa Sarfo’s declaration of intent. No, I don’t want Adwoa to win. She must not,” he wrote.
Kwame Anthony argued that Ms Akurugu must do more to deliver development projects to the constituency instead of relying on the NDC's nationwide electoral performance to retain the seat.
He suggested that the incumbent MP should be more assertive in demanding development for her constituents rather than appearing to plead for projects from the government.
“Our overall performance surpassing the NPP will not be enough to keep Dome-Kwabenya. Dome needs its own message and it must start with Elikplim on her feet and not on her knees,” he added.
The former lawmaker lost the NPP parliamentary primary in January 2024 to Mike Oquaye Jnr, who subsequently contested the December 2024 election against Elikplim Akurugu.
Elikplim Akurugu won the closely contested election, ending the NPP's long-standing hold on the constituency.
The Electoral Commission confirmed her as the winner on December 31, 2024, after resolving a dispute over results from one polling station.
The outcome marked a significant political shift in Dome-Kwabenya, which had been represented by the NPP since 2004.
