Ghana will host the World Boxing African Qualifying Tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in August 2027 after beating Nigeria to secure the hosting rights.
The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) confirmed the development following a successful bid, overturning an earlier provisional decision to award Nigeria the tournament.
Preparations are expected to begin immediately, with the federation stressing the need for early planning to ensure a successful competition.
“Congratulations to the Ghana Boxing Federation for a successful bid. Let’s get ready to start another round of hard work in pursuit of a successful tournament in August 2027,” a confirmation message stated.
“The work begins now. There’s no time at all. We are only nine months away,” it added.
The tournament will bring together boxers from across Africa as they compete for qualification opportunities for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States.
Hosting the event presents Ghana with an opportunity to showcase its organisational capabilities, strengthen its standing in African boxing and contribute to the development of the sport across the continent.
The focus will now shift to preparations, with the GBF expected to work towards delivering a successful tournament and ensuring that Ghana is ready to welcome athletes and officials from across Africa.
