AFCON Qualifiers: Black Stars head coach discloses strategy to win against Gambia

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has urged the Gambia to adopt an attacking approach when the two sides meet in their AFCON qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, the Portuguese coach said Ghana would be eager to dominate possession and maintain an attacking mentality throughout the 90 minutes.

Queiroz even proposed a light-hearted deal with his Gambian counterpart, challenging him to allow Ghana to have the ball for the entire match.

“I'm going to make an agreement with the Gambia coach. Give me the ball for 90 minutes. I promise, we attack. 90 minutes,” Queiroz said.

He explained that winning possession and retaining control of the ball would be central to Ghana's approach, stressing that the players must be prepared to work hard to regain possession whenever they lose it.

“We know that if you want to win the game, we have to fight to have the ball with us. We have to recover the ball. We have to keep the ball with us,” he said.

According to Queiroz, possession alone would not be enough, with the Black Stars expected to use the ball positively and create opportunities in the attacking third.

“After we keep the ball, we have to play with a positive mind and express our skills to go forward and try to score,” he said.

The Black Stars coach expressed confidence that a stronger attacking display and improved finishing could give Ghana a good opportunity to secure victory.

“I am very much confident that with positive football, attacking football, if our performance tomorrow is better, we're gonna be close to winning the game,” he said.
