2026 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B Qualifiers: CAF orders extra time in Edo Queens-Ampem Darkoa final

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifying final between Edo Queens and Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies to resume from the end of normal time after ruling that competition regulations were not followed.

The decision follows an appeal by Ampem Darkoa Ladies over the handling of the final, which was played in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on 5 September.

The two sides were level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, but the match went directly to a penalty shootout after the game coordinator instructed that penalties be taken without extra time.

Edo Queens won the shootout 4-1 to secure the zone’s qualification place for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

Ampem Darkoa subsequently protested the decision, with the Ghana Football Association submitting an official complaint to CAF on behalf of the club.

Following a review by CAF’s organising committee for women’s football, the governing body agreed that the match officials had failed to apply the competition regulations correctly.

CAF referred specifically to Article 72.4, which requires a final that is level after 90 minutes to go into 30 minutes of extra time, comprising two 15-minute periods.

Penalty kicks can only be used if the teams remain level after extra time.

CAF also cited Article 13.1, which provides that the technical criteria applicable to the final tournament also apply to zonal qualifying competitions.

As a result, CAF has annulled the outcome of the penalty shootout and ordered the final to resume from where it ended after 90 minutes.

The two teams will therefore play the required 30 minutes of extra time, with penalties to follow if the scores remain level.

CAF rejected Ampem Darkoa's request for the entire match to be replayed.

The governing body has also directed that the continuation be played at the same venue in Ouagadougou, while the exact date and kick-off time will be determined by the WAFU-B executive committee.

The winner of the contest will retain the region's qualification place at the 2026 CAF Women's Champions League.

The ruling gives Ampem Darkoa another opportunity to secure qualification after Edo Queens appeared to have won the decisive regional fixture on penalties.
