We must work, grow, compete to end AFCON trophy drought - Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has challenged his players to earn the right to dream of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) success by working hard and competing consistently as Ghana seek to end a 44-year wait for continental glory.

Ghana have not lifted the AFCON trophy since their fourth title in 1982, with the Black Stars falling short in the finals of 1992, 2010 and 2015.

The four-time African champions have also endured a difficult period in recent years, suffering consecutive group-stage exits before failing to qualify for the 2025 tournament in Morocco.

As Ghana prepare to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign later this month, Queiroz has called for realism and patience from supporters while the team rebuilds.

“We must have ambition, but also humility,” Queiroz told the Ghana FA website.

“We know our recent history, and we cannot talk about winning AFCON when we have not yet qualified.

“We have to work, grow, compete and earn our destiny.”

The 73-year-old will oversee his first competitive matches since returning to the Black Stars dugout when Ghana open their campaign away to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on 24 September.

The Black Stars will then host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on 27 September as they look to make a strong start in Group C.

Ghana will conclude the international window with a high-profile friendly against Morocco at the Grand Stade de Tanger on 4 October.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars have opened camp in Accra ahead of the upcoming fixtures as preparations intensify for the crucial qualifying campaign.
