2027 AFCON Qualifiers: Benjamin Asare calls for strong mentality ahead of Ghana opener against Ivory Coast

Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has called on his teammates to show resilience and determination as Ghana prepare to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The four-time African champions open their Group C campaign with a difficult away fixture against Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on 24 September before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

Speaking to the media, Asare said the squad are focused on making a positive start as they seek a return to the continental tournament after missing out on the 2025 edition in Morocco.

“From now going our preparations and mindset have to be tough to get our first win in the AFCON qualifiers,” the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper said.

Asare, the only locally based player in Carlos Queiroz’s squad, stressed that every player must remain ready to contribute, regardless of whether they start or begin on the bench.

“And like the coach said, whether you’re starting or on the bench, you have to have a tough mentality so that you’re ready when you’re called to action,” he added.

Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON ended a long-standing run of appearances at the tournament, increasing the significance of the current qualifying campaign.

Asare said the players are aware of the disappointment among supporters and are determined to restore confidence in the national team.

“Although we couldn’t qualify for the last tournament, the ultimate goal is to qualify for next year’s tournament, so that we regain the trust, encouragement and support of Ghanaians ahead of the tournament,” he said.

The goalkeeper also acknowledged the competition for places within the squad, insisting players must respect the decisions made by the coaching staff.

“In the game, you have to start from somewhere. Every coach has their preferences and players they want to use for tournaments. The coach’s job is to call the players, and we do our best when we are called,” he said.

Asare earned his World Cup debut after replacing the injured Lawrence Ati-Zigi against Panama before starting Ghana’s subsequent matches against England and Croatia. He remains one of three goalkeepers selected by Queiroz for the upcoming fixtures.

With Ghana facing a challenging opening test against Côte d’Ivoire, Asare appealed for unity and support from fans.

“Although everyone can criticise, we need the support of all Ghanaians to encourage us,” he said.

Following the AFCON qualifiers, the Black Stars will conclude the international window with a friendly against Morocco at the Grand Stade de Tanger on 4 October.
