Asamoah Gyan joins Black Stars backroom staff in new GFA role

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has been appointed Clubs and Player Relations Manager for the Black Stars, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced.

Gyan, Ghana's all-time leading scorer with 51 goals, joins the senior national team setup in a strategic role aimed at strengthening relationships between the Black Stars, players and their clubs, while also enhancing player welfare and engagement.

The 40-year-old enjoyed a distinguished international career, captaining Ghana at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and three FIFA World Cups.

His vast experience, leadership qualities and close ties with many members of the current squad are expected to provide an added boost to the national team.

As Clubs and Player Relations Manager, Gyan will act as a key link between the technical team, players and clubs.

His responsibilities will include facilitating communication regarding player call-ups, supporting player welfare initiatives and offering guidance and mentorship to members of the squad.

The appointment marks a continuation of Gyan's involvement with Ghana football, having previously worked closely with the various national teams in his capacity as a national teams ambassador.

His arrival comes as the Black Stars prepare to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign under head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Ghana face a difficult opening fixture away to Côte d'Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on 24 September before returning home to host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

The Black Stars will then conclude the international window with a high-profile friendly against Morocco at the Grand Stade de Tanger on 4 October as Queiroz continues preparations for the challenges ahead.
