Alexandra Tay eyes senior Black Queens opportunity after U-20 World Cup experience

Black Princesses defender Alexandra Tay says the experience gained at the U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland could help her push for a return to Ghana's senior team.

Tay, who is featuring at her second U-20 World Cup, has already made the step up to the Black Queens, having been part of Ghana's squad at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

The centre-back is now hoping her performances in Poland will strengthen her case for a possible call-up to the senior side for the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027 Play-Off Tournament.

Ghana are among six teams set to compete in the preliminary phase of the play-off tournament, alongside Chinese Taipei, Ecuador, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and Uzbekistan.

The preliminary phase will be played between November and December, with each team playing three matches. The two highest-ranked teams will progress to the final phase.

Tay believes playing against some of the world's best young players will be valuable as she continues her development.

"Any time you get the opportunity to play in a tournament with such a high level of competition to build your performances and qualities, I think that is really helpful for us [to prepare]," Tay told FIFA.

The defender will also be hoping to help Ghana achieve a historic milestone at the U-20 Women's World Cup.

Tay is expected to be in action when the Black Princesses face France in their final Group C game later today at the Arena Sosnowiec, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

The Black Princesses are aiming to reach the knockout stage of the competition for the first time, having made consecutive appearances at the tournament.
