'Galamsey remains an existential threat' – Gyampo demands more action

Professor Ransford Gyampo has called for more radical action against galamsey, saying the illegal mining menace continues despite measures introduced by the government.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority said his position during his recent appearance on TV3’s The Key Points was that the government’s existing interventions should be considered alongside the continued persistence of galamsey.

“I again asked every objective analysis of the issues to first look at what is being done vis-à-vis the persistence of the phenomenon while making calls for more to be done in order for one to be balanced in his view on the matter,” he said.

Prof Gyampo said he had never claimed that galamsey had been completely dealt with.

“I have never said Galamsey has been dealt with fully and I have never shied away from calling for more to be done in addressing the menace,” he said.

He said citizens had the right to demand stronger action because illegal mining continued to persist.

“Yes, galamsey still lingers on, and yes, this government at least has the attitude that admits and puts in place measures to address the menace,” he said.

“Yes, citizens have every right to demand more to be done especially when the phenomenon still persists,” he added.

Prof Gyampo maintained that galamsey remains an existential threat.

“Yes, any such demand must be honest in admitting what is being done while calling for more. Yes, galamsey remain an existential threat that must be radically confronted,” he said.
