Isaac Dogboe explains early retirement as former world champion turns to youth mentorship

Former WBO super-bantamweight world champion Isaac "Royal Storm" Dogboe has opened up on his decision to retire from professional boxing, saying he leaves the sport with no regrets after achieving his goals in the ring.

Dogboe announced his surprise retirement on Instagram on September 1, 2026, bringing an end to a professional career that spanned 13 years and saw him become Ghana's youngest-ever boxing world champion.

Speaking to the media about his decision, the 31-year-old said the time had come to pursue other ambitions while remaining grateful for everything boxing had given him.

"I have no regrets," Dogboe said. "There are other things I want to pursue in life, but boxing has given me so much."

The former world champion also encouraged parents to allow their children to take up boxing, insisting the sport instils discipline, responsibility and important life values.

According to Dogboe, boxing played a key role in shaping his character after a difficult and aggressive childhood.

"I was very aggressive growing up, but boxing calmed me down and helped me become a better person," he explained.

Reflecting on his career, Dogboe identified three moments that stand above the rest: fighting in Ghana for the first time at the Bukom Boxing Arena, winning the WBO world title and representing Ghana at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

His Olympic appearance remains one of the most significant experiences of his life despite ending in disappointment.

At just 17 years old, Dogboe became Ghana's youngest boxer at the London Olympics, competing in the bantamweight division.

His campaign ended in controversial circumstances after a first-round defeat to Japan's Satoshi Shimizu. Dogboe dominated the opening two rounds and led on the judges' scorecards before a heavily disputed third round swung the contest in favour of the Japanese boxer.

The verdict was met with loud boos from spectators inside the ExCeL Arena, with many observers believing the Ghanaian had been denied victory.

Despite the setback, Dogboe said the Olympics provided invaluable lessons and strengthened his determination to become a world champion.

"I learned a lot from that experience," he said. "I couldn't win an Olympic medal, so I focused on becoming a world champion before retiring."

That ambition was realised on April 28, 2018, when he stopped Jessie Magdaleno in the 11th round in Philadelphia to capture the WBO super-bantamweight title.

The triumph made him Ghana's youngest-ever boxing world champion at the age of 23 and earned him the SWAG Sports Personality of the Year award.

Dogboe successfully defended the belt against Japan's Hidenori Otake before losing the title and a subsequent rematch to Mexico's Emanuel Navarrete.

The Ghanaian paid tribute to his parents, particularly his father and trainer, Paul Dogboe, as well as his management team, sponsors and church for their unwavering support throughout his career.

"We were able to bridge the gap between boxing, business and religion, which was very good," he said, referencing his involvement with the Apostles Revelation Society (ARS), headquartered at Tadzewu in the Volta Region.

Looking ahead, Dogboe believes Ghana possesses talented young boxers capable of reaching the highest level if they receive the right guidance and support.

He urged aspiring fighters not to be discouraged by financial challenges, insisting commitment and determination remain the most important ingredients for success.

"For me, money is not everything. The glory is more important, so I was focused and committed to achieving something significant in boxing," he noted.

Although his days as an active fighter are over, Dogboe intends to remain involved in the sport through youth development and mentorship programmes.

As he embarks on a new chapter, the former world champion hopes his achievements will secure his place among the great names in Ghanaian boxing history.
