Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has praised the Black Stars for their disciplined defensive display following their goalless draw with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana’s backline, organised under head coach Carlos Queiroz, has been one of the standout units of the tournament so far, with the team yet to concede a goal after two group matches.
Despite facing 30 shots across their opening fixtures, the Black Stars remain among only a handful of sides still unbeaten defensively, highlighting their growing resilience at the tournament.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Lamptey commended the central defensive pairing of Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku, noting their rapid development on the international stage.
“I was surprised when the two centre-backs were paired. This is their first tournament. They fumbled in their first game, but yesterday, they were superb. Gideon has the experience. The back four was solid,” he said.
He also reserved praise for goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, insisting his performances have been consistent with his club form at Hearts of Oak.
“I’m not surprised Benjamin Asare is doing well in the national team; he has worked hard for this,” Lamptey added.
The draw against England leaves Ghana in a strong position in Group L, edging closer to qualification for the Round of 32.
The Black Stars will conclude their group campaign against Croatia on Saturday, June 27, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 GMT.
