Ghana defender Jerome Opoku says criticism surrounding the national team has become a source of motivation as the Black Stars push for a place in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.
The centre-back made the remarks after Ghana earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England in their Group L encounter on Tuesday at the Boston Stadium, a result that kept both sides level on four points heading into the final round of fixtures.
Despite being under sustained pressure and facing 19 attempts on goal, Ghana produced a disciplined defensive display to frustrate Thomas Tuchel’s side and preserve their unbeaten run at the tournament.
The four-time African champions are yet to concede a goal and now sit within touching distance of qualification.
Ghana entered the competition among the lowest-ranked teams, with widespread scepticism about their chances. However, their performances have begun to shift perceptions, with growing recognition of their resilience and organisation.
Speaking after the match, Opoku suggested the team has embraced the doubt as fuel rather than distraction.
He pointed to pre-tournament criticism and comments questioning the squad’s quality, adding that such narratives have been openly discussed within the camp.
“Ghanaians didn’t really think this team was that good, did they? Some people say this is the worst history, honest with you,” he said.
“And so, me and the boys were talking about it.
“Through my life, I’ve been an underdog. So, there’s nothing unusual. You know, that’s my being doubted. It’s been my habit. So, in my habitat. To prove people wrong — I get a buzz from it. And so does the team.
“Now we’re showing the fans, showing the world what we can do,” he concluded.
The result leaves Group L finely poised, with Ghana and England both on four points. England will meet Panama in their final group match, while Ghana face a crucial showdown with Croatia, where a place in the knockout stage will be on the line.
