A young Ghanaian lawyer has tragically died after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest while celebrating Ghana’s victory over Panama in the Black Stars’ opening match at the FIFA World Cup.
Sara Araba Tettey, 26, is said to have collapsed shortly after the final whistle of Ghana’s 1-0 win on Wednesday, June 17, as celebrations erupted among fans following the dramatic victory.
Tettey, a recent graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Faculty of Law, had only recently been called to the Ghana Bar.
She was working with O & A Legal Consult and was widely regarded by colleagues and peers as a talented young lawyer with a promising future.
According to reports, she was watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel in Bomso, near the KNUST campus in Kumasi, when she suddenly became unresponsive.
Witnesses said friends immediately rushed her to the KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel made extensive efforts to save her life.
Doctors and emergency responders reportedly administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes, but she was later pronounced dead.
The news of her passing has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s legal fraternity, particularly among former colleagues and classmates from KNUST and the Ghana School of Law, many of whom had recently celebrated her achievement of becoming a lawyer.
Friends and associates have remembered Tettey as a brilliant, hardworking and compassionate individual whose dedication and professionalism distinguished her among her peers. Tributes have continued to flood social media, with many expressing disbelief and sadness over the sudden loss.
Her body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted as investigations continue. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a joyous occasion for Ghanaian football supporters, as many continue to mourn the loss of a young professional whose life and career were only just beginning.
Meanwhile, the win puts Ghana in a strong early position in Group L, with two fixtures remaining. They will face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before wrapping up their group-stage campaign against Croatia on June 27.
The four-time African champions will be targeting back-to-back positive results as they aim to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run in 2010.
