Celebrate your WASSCE completion in a law-abiding manner — NUGS to 2026 candidates

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has urged final-year Senior High School students to celebrate the completion of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) responsibly and in accordance with the law.

The call follows a caution by the Ghana Police Service ahead of the end of the examinations today, Friday, June 19, amid concerns over rising cases of student violence and vandalism during post-examination celebrations.

In its earlier statement issued on June 18, the Police warned students against engaging in unlawful acts such as violence, arson, assault and the destruction of property, stressing that offenders would face arrest and prosecution.

In a statement dated June 19, NUGS endorsed the Police caution and called on candidates across the country to exercise restraint as they mark the end of their examinations.

“While the completion of WASSCE is a significant milestone that deserves celebration, NUGS urges all candidates to conduct themselves in a responsible, disciplined, and law-abiding manner,” the statement said signed by its President Rashid Ibrahim, read in part.

The student body expressed concern over recent incidents involving attacks on school authorities and the destruction of school and private property by students.

According to NUGS, such acts undermine the educational environment and place lives and property at risk.

The union also reminded students that school facilities are public assets funded by taxpayers and should be protected rather than destroyed.

“We therefore strongly advise all students to refrain from acts that may cause injury to fellow students, teachers, non-teaching staff, or members of the public. The values of discipline, respect, and peaceful coexistence must guide all end-of-examination celebrations,” it added.
