The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has congratulated Dr Sylvia Ama Adusu on her historic election as a judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026–2035 term.

Dr Adusu's election marks a major milestone for Ghana and Africa, making her the first African woman to serve on the tribunal.

The announcement of her election was made on Thursday, June 18, by Ghana’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ben Dotse Malor, who described the achievement as a proud moment for both Ghana and the African continent.

In a statement shared on social media on Friday, June 19, the Gender Ministry praised Dr Adusu's achievement and its significance for women's leadership.

“Her election marks a proud moment for Ghana and a significant milestone for women in leadership, as she becomes the first African woman to serve on the Tribunal,” the ministry said.

The ministry noted that the accomplishment reflects Dr Adusu's distinguished legal career, commitment to justice and Ghana's growing influence on the global stage.

It further commended her for inspiring women and girls across the continent through her trailblazing achievement.

“This remarkable achievement reflects her distinguished career in international law, unwavering commitment to justice, and Ghana's enduring pursuit of excellence on the global stage,” the statement noted.

Dr Adusu's election is expected to strengthen Africa's representation in international maritime governance and legal adjudication.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is responsible for resolving disputes arising from the interpretation and application of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Until her election, Dr Adusu served as a Chief State Attorney of Ghana with more than 30 years of legal practice.

Her expertise spans international law, civil litigation, criminal prosecution and arbitration.

She holds a PhD in Law, specialising in the Law of the Sea, from the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom.
