Marc Cucurella has completed his move to Real Madrid and will join after the World Cup, with the Spain international becoming the first signing of Jose Mourinho's second period in charge at the Bernabeu.
Cucurella departs Chelsea after four years at Stamford Bridge, having moved to west London from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth more than £60 million in August 2022.
The 27-year-old returns to his homeland to form part of Mourinho's rebuild at the expense of former Madrid boss Xabi Alonso, who must now seek a replacement left-back ahead of his first season in charge of Chelsea.
The deal to take Cucurella to Madrid is reportedly worth £47.5 million, rising to £51.8m with add-ons.
Madrid confirmed that Cucurella, who is part of Spain's squad at this summer's 2026 World Cup, has signed a six-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2032.
Cucurella’s future at Chelsea had been thrown into doubt after tensions emerged between the defender and the club’s hierarchy following comments made during Spain’s international camp in March.
The left-back openly questioned the club’s direction and expressed reservations about the decision to dismiss Enzo Maresca in January - remarks that reportedly did not sit well with senior figures at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso is keen to build a squad with greater experience and leadership, so Cucurella's exit comes as a blow to his own recruitment drive.
At present, 20-year-old Dutch defender Jorrel Hato represents the only natural long-term option within the squad, but there is little expectation that Alonso would begin the campaign relying solely on the youngster in that position.
Elsewhere, Chelsea face continued interest in midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Madrid are said to be among the clubs monitoring the Argentinian, despite Chelsea’s determination to keep hold of the World Cup winner.
The London club have placed a substantial valuation on Fernandez, who also drew attention in March after publicly voicing concerns while on international duty.
Mourinho's summer plans extend beyond midfield. They are also seeking to strengthen their attacking options and have reportedly tabled a £129 million offer for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez following the arrival of their new manager.
Those moves would cap an aggressive recruitment drive by Madrid, who are also believed to have secured free-agent agreements with Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate and Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva after the expiration of their contracts.
Meanwhile, Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries is expected to be confirmed as a Madrid player following the culmination of the World Cup.
The Netherlands international is in line to challenge for, and potentially claim, the starting right-back role ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
