He can become one of Ghana's best players - Carlos Queiroz waxes lyrical about 'impressive' Caleb Yirenkyi

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has backed Caleb Yirenkyi to become one of Ghana's finest midfielders after the youngster delivered another promising performance in Ghana's 1-1 draw against Wales on Tuesday night.

The FC Nordsjaelland midfielder scored Ghana's equaliser at the Cardiff City Stadium, continuing his impressive rise with the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Yirenkyi reacted quickest in the second half to turn home after Ernest Nuamah's effort had rebounded off the post, helping Ghana secure a draw in Queiroz's first game in charge of the four-time African champions.

Speaking after the match, the Portuguese tactician was full of praise for the midfielder, highlighting both his quality and potential.

“I think he is a fine player with a great future. He is still young; he has a lot of things to learn," Queiroz said after the game.

"I think with more games, with more experience, he can become one of the best players of the Ghana National Team in the midfield. I think it's the midfield is his position,” he added.

Yirenkyi's latest display comes after an impressive introduction to international football during the 2025 Unity Cup. His performances at both club and international level earned him a place in Ghana's final 26-man squad for the World Cup.

The talented midfielder has enjoyed a strong campaign in the Danish Superliga with FC Nordsjaelland and is increasingly being viewed as one of Ghana's brightest prospects heading into the global tournament.

The Black Stars will conclude their World Cup preparations with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before travelling to North America for the competition.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before taking on England six days later. Their final group-stage fixture will be against Croatia on June 27.

After suffering early exits in recent major tournaments, Ghana will be aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
