“I’ll Put My Life on the Line!” — Appiah‑Kubi Questions Basis of Wontumi’s Galamsey Conviction

Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi has cast serious doubt on the evidence that led to the conviction of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, arguing that the case exposes troubling weaknesses in Ghana’s justice system.

“I can put my life on the line that with this evidence, and someone having been convicted for 20 years, what is the guarantee that if someone comes to say I have committed murder and there is no corroborative evidence, I won’t be jailed?” he asked, questioning the precedent the ruling sets.

Appiah-Kubi, who previously represented Chairman Wontumi during the trial, warned that the conviction could become a dangerous benchmark if not subjected to rigorous legal scrutiny.

He further revealed his readiness to rejoin Wontumi’s legal team should an appeal be filed.

“If anybody connected to Chairman Wontumi or himself reinvites me for an appeal, I will do it. I am waiting for the instruction,” he stated.

The lawyer clarified that his earlier withdrawal from the case should not be misconstrued as abandoning his client, explaining that circumstances at the time made stepping aside the most appropriate decision.

Beyond the courtroom, Appiah-Kubi disclosed plans to author a book examining Ghana’s justice system, using Wontumi’s case as a central reference point. He believes the publication will help Ghanaians better understand the systemic issues highlighted by the high-profile trial and contribute to broader conversations on justice and legal reform.
