The management of Celebrity Golf Club at Sakumono is raising urgent concerns over encroachment on their facility, as portions of the club’s perimeter wall have been demolished by intruders who have unlawfully occupied parts of the 18-hole course.
Club Captain, Mr. Alex Oppong Baffoe, along with some club members, spoke to the media after inspecting the course on Wednesday to assess the ongoing encroachment.
Mr. Baffoe lamented the deteriorating state of the golf course, revealing that the natural environment is being destroyed, with some bird species abandoning the area and the greenery suffering due to the loss of their water source, which has been overtaken by developers.
“We are law-abiding citizens, but sadly, the law has not been fair to us. We have no intention of taking matters into our own hands,” he stated.
He further disclosed that the encroachment is driving some members away, with golfers opting to play elsewhere due to safety concerns.
Members expressed growing fears over the rapid and aggressive manner in which encroachers are seizing the land, leaving golfers feeling exposed and insecure.
Longstanding members, some of whom have played at the club for over 13 years, described the situation as heartbreaking. They highlighted how the golf club has created employment opportunities, especially for youth serving as caddies and even players.
Disturbingly, some golfers alleged that certain security personnel have been complicit in aiding the illegal encroachers.
“How can a civilized society stand by while a golf course is being destroyed? Ghana has only four such facilities, yet they are cherished in many countries,” a frustrated member questioned.
Celebrity Golf Club has been a key hub for golfing activities in Ghana, hosting numerous tournaments and events. Just last week, it welcomed participants from across Africa for the Female African Regional Tournament, contributing to both tourism and sports development in the country.
