Former Ghanaian defender, Sam Johnson has hailed Asamoah Gyan as the greatest striker in Ghana’s football history.
Gyan, who officially retired from professional football in June 2023, remains Ghana's all-time leading goal scorer with an impressive 51 goals.
The ex-Liberty Professionals, Udinese, and Sunderland forward represented Ghana at three FIFA World Cups—2006 in Germany, 2010 in South Africa, and 2014 in Brazil.
When asked to name Ghana’s best striker during an interview with Sporty FM, Johnson was emphatic in his choice.
“Asamoah Gyan is Ghana's best striker. He has impressive numbers,” he stated.
Gyan holds the record as Africa’s top scorer in World Cup history with six goals. He also featured in the 2004 Summer Olympics and played in seven Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments (2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019).
His contributions helped Ghana secure a third-place finish in 2008 and runner-up positions in 2010 and 2015.
Over his club career, Gyan made 347 appearances and netted 177 goals. His last club was Legon Cities before he announced his retirement from football.
