Minority Leader in Parliament Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin has alleged that Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was part of what he describes as a “grand conspiracy” to remove his predecessor, former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, from office.

Justice Torkornoo was removed from office by President John Dramani Mahama on September 1, 2025, following the work of a five-member committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, investigated petitions calling for her removal.

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, then the most senior Supreme Court Justice, became Acting Chief Justice following the suspension until he was confirmed as the substantive.

According to the Effutu MP, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie participated in the alleged scheme because he wanted to succeed Justice Torkornoo as Chief Justice.

Speaking on Accra-based Atinka TV, Osahen Afenyo-Markin accused members of the judiciary of treating the former Chief Justice unfairly and questioned the circumstances surrounding her removal.

“My Lord Baffoe-Bonnie was part of the grand conspiracy against his predecessor, Justice Torkornoo. It was a grand conspiracy,” he alleged.

Osahen Afenyo-Markin further disputed the fairness of the process and questioned the committee's decision to recommend Justice Torkornoo's removal when some of the petitions were allegedly still pending.
