Second edition of Northern Sector Handball Championship takes place in Tamale

The second edition of the Northern Sector Handball Championship, aimed at promoting handball across northern Ghana, took place at the Tamale College of Education Park in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.

The event, which ran for three days, sought to nurture young handball talent and boost the sport’s development in the region, with potential pathways to national competitions.

Dubbed “A Better Future for the Youth Through Sports Discipline,” the championship was organized by the Northern Regional Handball Association with support from B-Diet, Ecobank, Total Energy, and Wooden. It provided a competitive platform for emerging teams to showcase their skills while fostering community spirit.

Global Trotters Handball Club emerged as the men's champions, followed by Dreams Handball Club, Supreme Handball Club, Navrongo Handball Club, Air Benders Handball Club, Bole Handball Club, and Kpandai Handball Club. In the women’s division, Dreams Handball Club claimed victory, followed by Global Trotters Club, Supreme Shooters Club, Bole Handball Club, and Air Benders. The event featured seven men’s and five women’s teams, along with schools, sports officials, and stakeholders from the Upper West, Upper East, Savannah, and Northern Regions.

Officiating the games were referees Shadrach Dunee, Theophilus Quarmyne, Sulemana Abdul Mumin, and Mubarak Suhuyini Mohammed.

Mr. Imoro Osman, the Chairman of the event and Physical Education Coordinator for the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Ghana Education Service (GES), praised the organizers and participating teams. He emphasized that training young handball players would uncover hidden talents and contribute to national sports development.

"We need collaboration with the Ghana Education Service to build young talent, creating an avenue for showcasing skills, fostering competition, and building regional unity,” he said. Mr. Osman encouraged local participation and community support for future events, stating, “These efforts are essential for nurturing handball at the grassroots level and identifying new talent for the national handball scene.”

Mr. Charles Atia, Executive Director of B-DIET Company, underscored the importance of supporting youth sports, noting that it can attract tourists and investors, which in turn contributes to national development. “We have vibrant youth with immense potential, and our goal is to help develop their skills for a brighter future,” he remarked, reaffirming his company’s commitment to supporting youth initiatives to help address unemployment.

Chairman of the Northern Regional Handball Association, Mr. Salifu Abdallah, highlighted that the event was designed to inspire youth in the Northern Sector to pursue their dreams in handball. “We want to support young talent both in sports and academics, ensuring they have access to opportunities beyond the handball court,” he said. He stressed the Association’s dedication to fostering a passion for handball and creating an atmosphere that encourages youth development.

Mr. Abdallah concluded by stating that the event was intended to promote the holistic development of the youth, contributing to the region’s socio-economic growth.
