Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has expressed his thoughts on the state of the nation, noting that true societal change requires a shift in the mindset of the citizens.
Speaking in a recent episode of the I Wanna Talk podcast, the 30BG boss reflected on the aftermath of the EndSARS protests and the current political climate.
Davido said he was initially happy to see Nigerians protest during EndSARS, believing that change was coming. The singer noted that he felt discouraged when December arrived and people went back to partying, adding that the movement lost its steam because citizens have families and lives to live.
The music star mentioned that while he cannot fully advise people going through economic hardship because he does not share their exact experience, he believes the country needs a total overhaul.
Davido noted that the country has to change from the politicians down to the citizens. He expressed concern that the same people who protested are now campaigning for politicians, stating that those who claim to fight for the people often change when they get a taste of power.
He said:
"I was happy to see Nigerians protest during EndSARS. I thought change was coming, but December came and people were partying. Even me, who was initially optimistic about the movement got discouraged. I was like we can't kill ourselves. We have kids and people we are living for."
"Once the government is bad, there would be hardship. I can't even advise people who are going through economic hardship because I am not going through what they are going through, even though I have my own struggles, too. What I can say is, Nigeria, fix up. The country has to change from politicians to citizens, everything."
"We can't change our society until we change our mindset as a people. Today, the same people that were protesting are campaigning for politicians. Those who claim to fight for the people often change when they get power."
