Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has declared that the Afrobeats genre will not progress if artistes limit themselves to making music that only appeals to fans.
Speaking at his concert over the weekend, he emphasized the importance of artistic freedom and personal expression.
Rema made it clear that he prioritises his own taste over public opinion, stating that he makes music he likes before considering what others want. He also reaffirmed his status in the industry, boldly declaring himself the Prince of Afrobeats.
He said:
"I don't care what you say about me. I don't care if you like what I like. But I make music that I like before you like it. If I stick to what you like, Afrobeats is not going to move forward. And I will say it one more time, I am the f**king Prince of Afrobeats."
