NPP lost 2024 election due to misgovernance, not disunity — Kwame Anthony

Spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, Julius Kwame Anthony, has rejected claims that disunity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was a major factor in its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He said the party’s loss was rather caused by what he described as misgovernance, arrogance of power and failure to remain accountable to Ghanaians.

His comments follow renewed discussions within the NPP about the factors that contributed to the party’s defeat and its ongoing reorganisation ahead of the 2028 elections.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Tuesday, August 18, Kwame Anthony said the NPP was united in what he described as its failure to deliver on the expectations of Ghanaians.

“The New Patriotic Party was the most united party ahead of election 2024. They were united in their misgovernance, they were united in their arrogance of power, they were united in their lack of accountability to the Ghanaian people so much that they have carried that lack of accountability into opposition,” he said.

He said although NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia identified disunity and certain utterances by party members as factors that contributed to the defeat, the party must look beyond those issues.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicator cited the controversy surrounding the former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, and Akonta Mining as an example of what he described as the NPP’s resistance to accountability.

According to him, the party’s handling of such issues demonstrated that its problems went beyond internal disagreements.

“The real ends of power is about delivering on the socio-economic mandates of the people, not just possessing power,” Kwame Anthony noted.
