The Minister of Works and Housing, Hon. Samuel Atta-Akyea, pushing for the construction of underground drainage systems to prevent floods in the city of Accra.

Hon. Atta Akyea revealed this on Monday during an inspection of some drainages in Accra. He observed that there are many challenges Accra continue to face due to poor drainages.

The minister was accompanied by some officials of his ministry and some officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The inspection exercise began from Nima around Paloma Hotel, then to Adabraka where work was ongoing to clear the drainage, further to North Kaneshie, Sukura, Sakaman, Mallam, Accra Academy and the Korle Lagoon.

"We do not need open drains, what we need are underground sewages in where filth is not openly paraded. In every civilized environment, you find that filth is buried underground," he said.

The underground drains will help give us hygienic environment, also prevent diseases like Fever, Cholera, Malaria, etc.

"Most of these projects will be handed over to world class engineers who would join forces with our local engineers to bring a lasting solution to the problem. It means that we will allocate funds from the budget to pay for these projects to sort this problem out once and for all," Atta Akyea stated.

The minister further disclosed that it is a national project of trans-generational consequences which everybody should be interested in.

He urged Ghanaians to support the project in making Ghana a clean and better place for everyone.
