A nine-day artistic exhibition designed to help the public to become receptive to environmental concerns has opened at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in Kumasi.
The programme, organized under the supervision of the University's Department of Painting and Sculpture, is under the theme: 'The Grid - 9 Day Wonderer'.
On display are varieties of artistic impressions on the extent of environmental degradation, crafted through the use local materials such as snail shells, cowries, calabash, traditional talisman and palm kennel.
Mr Livingstone Amoako, the Lead Artist, who is also an environmentalist, told the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, that the programme was necessitated by the excessive deterioration of the nation's natural resources.
As artists, he said, it was their duty to use their creative intelligence to encourage the people to protect 'what nature has given the nation', adding that poor environmental management practices was destroying bio-diversity.
Mr Amoako said the very survival of mankind was dependent on the ecology and that the rate at which many plant and animal species are becoming extinct, should be a matter of concern to all stakeholders.
He gave assurance that the artists, through paintings and sculpture, would continue to raise public awareness on environmental issues to ensure that the eco-system was maintained.
