Private medical institutions complement the efforts of government to provide Ghanaians with an equal opportunity to access medical care.

This observation was made by Professor Aaron Lante Lawson, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre, at the Matriculation and White Coat ceremony of the Accra College of Medicine at Adjiringano on Saturday.

He said until recently one could only obtain training in medicine in public universities.

Prof Lawson said gaining admission has always been a problem in view of the limited space in for the large number of people whose dream was to become medical professionals.

He said this had a negative impact on the doctor-patient ratio leaving many Ghanaians who needed medical care at the hands of quack doctors.

Prof Lawson commended the College for providing more Ghanaians with an opportunity to study medicine.

He urged the matriculating students to develop analytical minds and to remember that there was no easy way to success other than perseverance.

Prof Lawson asked them to study hard to gain knowledge as this would help them to practice effectively in their chosen field.

He advised them to uphold the rules and regulations of the College and to adhere to the disciplinary code and ethical values of the profession.

Prof Afua Hesse, President of the College, urged the students to be honest to touch the lives of others if they should live meaningful lives.

She said stressed the determination of the staff and faculty of the College to help the students to achieve their aim.

Prof Hesse said the College would continue to offer world-class medical training that is relevant and research-oriented towards solving problems.

Dr Kwaku Agyeman Manu, Minister of Health, in a speech read on his behalf, commended the College for filling a gap in the country's medical education and urged the students to be role models in the efforts to ensure the well-being of all Ghanaians.
