OCT 9, 2017 LISTEN

Not having had access to the news since last night, until a few moments ago when I read media reports about the casualties, number of fatalities thus far and saw photographs of the devastation it caused, I was completely unaware of the magnitude of the fire caused by the gas explosion at the adjacent but seperately owned Atomic Road junction gas and petrol filling stations.

One is lost for words to express one's sadness that such terrible tragedies continue to occur in Ghana just because the power and influence of vested interests in the energy sector prevents the carrying out of the reforms needed to stop such explosions and fires from harming innocent people going about their daily lives, who happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

We share the pain of the grieving families whose loved ones were either injured whiles escaping from the area or suffered severe burns - and send our condolences to those whose loved ones have unfortunately passsed away.

Their deaths must not be in vain - the government must force through all the reforms required to prevent such tragedies in future. The more responsible sections of the media ought to ensure that that happens quickly. And they must also ensure that all the victims' families are adequetly compensated. May the injured victims heal quickly. And may the souls of those who lost their lives rest in peace.
