Students of the Department of Religious Studies at Islamic University College, Ghana (IUCG) have devised strategies to rekindle academic excellence and self-confidence at the Department.

To actualize the strategies, the students engaged lecturers of the Department in a discussion which showcased a sense of healthy student-faculty relationship on campus at the weekend.

Led by Alahji Dr. Husain Ibrahim, Head of Department, faculty members addressed the students in turns.

Among the faculty members were Shaikh Ishak Abdul Husain, Shaikh Husain Kamagtey, and Alhaji Mohammed Amin. The rest were Mr Abdul Aziz Sham-una Super and Madam Kausar. Also in attendance was Imam Mujib, Head of Cultural Unit of the University College.

The faculty members were unanimous on the need for students to avoid inferiority complex and uphold self-confidence in pursuit of Religion as an academic program.

In the words of the lecturers, Religion as a program of study constitutes a great source of opportunities of further studies and jobs in a number of areas for graduates.

On their part, the students were glad to learn that a product of Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies could pursue any program in Social Sciences, Business Administration, and Liberal Arts at the post-graduate level.

Under the banner of a revitalised association, the students vowed to enhance the image of Religious Studies and compete with their counterparts at other departments and faculties in public recognition and professional efficiency.

Later in a chat with Malam Mohammed Kassim, Director of Academic Administration of IUCG, he stated that the University College had outlined measures to transform the Department of Religious Studies into a modern center of choice for religious and secular scholarship.

Malam Kassim, who is himself a product of the Department, explained that the Religious Studies program has been well integrated - with relevant Social Sciences and Liberal Arts - to produce holistic scholars and creative thinkers needed to solve the multi-dimensional problems of contemporary society.

A study of the Handbook of the University College reveals that students of Religious Studies have the privilege to study courses in Business Administration, Communication Studies, English Language, and International Relations.

These courses include INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, ISLAMIC BANKING AND FINANCE, INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION STUDIES, and MEDIA AND MUSLIM SOCIETY. Others are ACADEMIC WRITING and ISLAM AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS.
