Ministers condemn Marwako Supervisor's act

Accra, March 7, GNA - Mr Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and other Ministers have condemned the actions of the Marwako's Supervisor.

Addressing the Press at Abelemkpe in Accra, he said the case was of two parts; the criminal aspect and labour aspect and that the police were handling the criminal aspect while the ministry was handling the labour aspect.

He said he was unhappy about the incidence and had asked the labour department to carry out investigations and bring the report within a week from which he would be able to determine the actions the Ministry would take against Marwako.

He said the Executives of the Marwako had also condemned the actions which meant that it was not a cooperate decision for Marwako to treat workers that way but an individual who did that to a fellow worker

'So we are handling it from one person to the other and it will not be fair if we rush to put a sanction on Marwako to shut down,' he said.

He asked Ghanaians to be calm and wait for the outcome of the report and that the outcome of the investigation could also unearth any secret about the incidence.

He advised Ghanaians not be in a rush to take actions against Marwako until the outcome of the investigations.

Affirming the decision, Ms Otiko Djaba, the Minister of Gender and Social Protection said the Gender ministry was working with the Employment and Trade Union Congress to make sure that such acts were not repeated.

She said there should be sanctions for people who maltreat others or close down entities because Ghana had come a long way to entertain such acts.

'Never again should anybody whether Ghanaian or None-Ghanaian treat a fellow human being that way because is an abuse and everybody has right,' she said.

Ms Djaba said that Ghana was a free and friendly country and that her hospitality must not be taken for granted.

'If it was your own child who has even made a mistake would you put pepper in her eyes? So on behalf of all women I am condemning the act, because it cannot happen in other foreign countries. It will not be possible for a Ghanaian to do that in Lebanon,' she added.

She said the foreigners must respect the law and ethics of the country.

It is reported that Jihad Chasban a Lebanese Supervisor of Marwako Restaurant, the Abelemkpe branch dipped the head of another staff, a Ghanaian female worker into blended pepper on Sunday February 26.

Jihad had been arrested and assisting the police in the investigations.

Meanwhile, the officials of Marwako had condemned Jihad's act and suspended him.

He later issued a statement apologising to the lady and the public.
