Asamankese, Feb. 26, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the West Akyem Municipal Assembly has organized a workshop for women aspiring to be elected assembly members in the March 3 polls.
Organized in collaboration with the European Union (EU), the workshop aimed at enhancing the participants' knowledge and understanding on the need for women's voices to be heard through increased participation in the decision making in local government.
Also participating were People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs), traditional leaders, religious leaders, youth, and women's groups, drawn from all the electoral areas in the Municipality.
Some of the topics treated were on the Electoral Process and Modalities of the 2015 District Assembly Elections, the Structure and Functions of District Assemblies, the Role of Assembly and Unit Committee Members, and the Significance of Involving the Marginalized and the Excluded, and Fund Raising Skills.
Others are Image Grooming, Communication Skills and Public Speaking Skills.
Mr. Prosper Lagble, Eastern Regional Deputy Director of the Commission, identified public speaking as a major challenge facing women in their quest to vie for leadership positions and encouraged them to try and overcome that.
Mr. Lagble said women at all times should define and package their messages clearly to their intended target audience for effective impact.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. George Mensah Apaloo, advised the participants to be bold and strive hard to win their seats in order to have the chance of contributing towards the assembly's development.
Earlier in a welcoming address, the Municipal Director of the Commission, Madam Modesta Annie Sapaty, appealed to the electorate to turn out in their numbers to vote for candidates whom they considered capable of meeting their aspirations.
Madam Sapaty said because women were good managers in the home they were likely to be great assets to the assembly and encouraged them to redouble their efforts to win their seats.
