Government says it has retrieved 14.5 million Ghana cedis as part of the illegal money paid to contractors of the erstwhile Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Agency (GYEEDA).

Deputy Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, made this known at the opening of the conference on the National Anti Corruption Action Plan.

The National Anti Corruption Action Plan is a 10-year national roadmap to fight corruption in the country.

It is also aimed at deepening Ghana's democratic dispensation.

The National Anti Corruption Action Plan was initiated in 2009 by President John Mahama, then the Vice President.

In 2013 President Mahama instructed the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to retrieve monies illegally paid to individuals and companies through contracts with GYEEDA, the Savanna Accelerated Development Agency (SADA) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

He had also asked the Minister for Youth and Sports to suspend, with immediate effect, all payments under all GYEEDA contracts, except the payment of arrears to workers up to the end of the year.

Former National Coordinator of GYEEDA -- now National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) -- Abuga Pele and Managing Director of Goodwill Consultancy Firm (a contractor), Philip Akpene Assibit have been charged by government for misappropriation of funds at the agency.
