Spanish La Liga Champions Atletico Madrid will be without one of their top strikers in their title defence next season. David Villa transferred from Barcelona after winning the Spanish league to repeat the feat with current Champions Atletico.
The player will once again move on after completing a move to New York City FC in the MLS due to an 'irresistible' offer.
Villa who played in last season's UEFA Champions League final with Atletico Madrid thanked Diego Simeone and said his goodbye's to the fans in Madrid on the Atletico website:
'It is an irresistible project for me and my family, it is very, very good. It is about football and I have to accept it.
'I will be a fan of Atletico all my life for what they have given me this year.
'It has been a great project for me both personally as well as sporting and now I face a new challenge which is what I have always looked to do in my career and my life.
'I would like to thank the people at Atletico and those that tried to convince me to stay, like Cholo [coach Diego Simeone] and the rest of the coaching staff.'
David Villa has been named in the final 23-man squad for Spain in the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament.
