The chief and elders of Sesemi, a community near Abokobi in the Ga East Municipality, have passionately appealed to the government and private organisations to assist in the provision of basic schools for the area.
The absence of such schools, according to Nii Anom Momli, Chief of Sesemi, was having a negative impact on the development of the area.
Due to the lack of primary schools in the area, Nii Anom Momli said, parents have been left with no option than to enroll their wards in schools in distant communities, resulting in the children having to trek long distances to and from school daily.
'Having schools here will help a lot,' he said, adding that a school in the community would ensure easy monitoring of the children.
He further noted that about four years ago, a non- governmental organisation (NGO) constructed a borehole for the Sesemi community, but as at last year, it is not operating, which was making residents of the community trek long distances in search of water.
He further urged organisations and other heads of the various municipalities to help build a borehole in the community.
Nii Momli made the appeal when Prince Doarchin from Denmark visited the Sesemi Frederickgave Plantation and Museum Centre.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ga East District, Mr. John Kwao Sackey, in October 2006, the Danish Ambassador, Flemming Bjor Pederson, and the Deputy Minister of Education of Denmark, Mr. Bertel Haarder, cut the sod to commence work on the Sesemi Frederickgave Plantation and Museum Centre, with the aim of bringing Sesemi and the Ga East District under the spotlight of global tourism.
He noted that the Prince's visit was to attest to the importance the Danish government and its people attached to a common heritage, as a people with a common past and ideals.
He said the Ga East Assembly was seriously projecting the site to become a well known and must-visit tourist site to potential tourists.
Mr. John Kwao Sackey said the open air museum, when it materialises, would enable the country have a feel of different cultures, adding, 'It will be a one-stop tourist destination.'
'Abokobi, the headquarters of Ga East, is the 'Vatican City' of Ghana, whereas the Fredericksgave is our Common Heritage site between Denmark and Ghana,' he stressed.
He said the visit by Prince Doarchin was historic in the sense that it would further explore and deepen the cultural heritage of Denmark and Ghana, as far as Danish heritage was concerned in the Ga East Municipality in particular.
