Chiefs asked to advise political parties to campaign on issues

Mr. George Hikah Benson, Upper West Regional Minister on Sunday asked chiefs to ensure that political parties dwell on
issues when they come round campaigning in their communities in order to
ensure a violence-free elections.
He said all political parties had development as their main goal of seeking power and everything possible should be done to ensure that political campaigns are carried out in an atmosphere devoid of insults, conflicts and recriminations.
He was addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of the Kaleo Traditional Area in the Nadowli district to climax their annual Zumbenti festival.
The festival is a period of reconciliation, planning for the future and making the necessary efforts to pre-empt dangers that lie ahead, offering of sacrifices and coming into communion with their dead relatives.
Mr Benson urged the chiefs, opinion leaders and the National Commission for Civic Education to advise people who are of voting age to register when the voters' register is opened.
Wing Commander Eric Dakuah (rtd), Nadowli District Chief Executive appealed to chiefs, Assembly and Unit Committee members to assist the assembly to improve upon its internal revenue generation, which, he said, left much to be desired.
He said beneficiaries of the poverty alleviation fund owed the Assembly about 250,000 Ghana cedis and all attempts to make them pay have not yielded any positive response.
In a speech read on his behalf, Naa Banamini Sandu, Paramount Chief of the area commended the President for reintroducing subsidies on fertilizer but appealed for the subsidies to be extended to other inputs such as chemicals.
He further asked for the provision of dams and dugouts for their communities as they would improve the lot of the people and restrain the young men and women from deserting their communities during the dry months of the year.
