The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council has urged the chiefs and people of Tema and Nungua to exercise restraint and resolve their dispute over the ownership of the Meridian Rock through dialogue.
The Council expressed concern about the escalating tensions between the two traditional areas, particularly exchanges among their youth on social media.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, and signed by the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council Chairman, Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey, the Council warned that the growing hostility could threaten peace and security in the Greater Accra Region.
It called on both traditional areas to remain calm and work towards an amicable resolution of the dispute.
“The Peace Council would like to urge both parties to exercise restraint and remain calm while working towards an amicable resolution of the dispute,” the statement said.
The Council stressed the need for the feuding parties to engage in constructive dialogue, negotiations and reconciliation rather than allow their differences to deepen divisions between the two communities.
It also called on stakeholders to use the appropriate institutions to address their concerns and build consensus on a mutually acceptable resolution.
The Council noted that the two traditional areas shared more interests than their differences and urged their leaders to approach the matter with openness and mutual respect.
“The Council therefore advises that disagreements should be addressed through the appropriate institutions to facilitate constructive engagement and build consensus for mutually acceptable outcomes,” it added.
The Peace Council further cautioned social media users against creating platforms or engaging in activities that could inflame tensions between the communities.
