In one field, soil turns to dust. In the next, it holds together, dark and moist three days after rain.
That difference doubled a farmer's yield.
Agriculture causes 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to Climate Media Awards statement on agriculture. In Samaru, Kaduna State, it is starting to store carbon instead.
Engineer Lawan Abdul, 51, farmed the same hectare for years. 12 bags. Same seed. Less rain. Hausa farmers call it 'Kasa ta gaji' — the land is tired.
Pilot records reviewed in Zaria show his testimony: "Since I started adopting the strategies we were taught, my yields have increased by 100%. This was very surprising and encouraging for me."
Double. Same land.
Abdul is one of 1,030 soybean farmers in a N100 million regenerative agriculture pilot launched in 2023, implemented by TechnoServe and IDH with technical guidance from Centre for No-Till Agriculture, Ghana, according to press release October 15, 2024.
Method is simple, wrote Vanguard and RM Times October 2024: cover cropping to keep soil alive, ripping at 15-20cm to break hardpan without inversion, crop rotation to fix nitrogen, hedgerows for pollinators.
According to Dr. Kofi Boa, Centre for No-Till Agriculture, Ghana, technical partner, "Ripping at 15-20cm breaks hardpan without inverting soil, allowing water infiltration while cover crops keep soil alive."
FAO and conservation agriculture research found that this restores soil while boosting yield. Research shows minimally disturbed soils covered with mulch improve water infiltration and reduce runoff. At Sabon Gida, this reporter squeezed soil: the dusty field crumbled, the regenerative field held ball shape — moist three days after rain.
That moisture matters. In a NiMet 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction released February 20, 2024, "in July, there is likelihood of a severe dry spell that may persist for more than 15 days after establishment of rainfall in the northern states" and an early end of season was predicted for parts of Kaduna, Kano, Plateau and Nasarawa.
The source added that enhanced soil carbon management has a global technical mitigation potential of 1.9 Gt CO2 per year, and at farm level, soil organic carbon sequestration has been estimated to range between 0.1 and 0.75 tons of carbon per hectare per year.
The ground was prepared earlier. According to IFDC, the Sorghum and Millet in Sahel Project covers 89 communities in Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Gombe. 15,000 farmers trained in 2016, 8,000 in business including 1,606 women and 1,325 youths. Two women now sit on grain negotiation teams, NAN reports.
Where yield falls, women eat last. Where it doubles, they eat first.
At Sabon Gida, Zaria, Aisha Lawal, 38, mother of four and pilot farmer, showed her diary to this reporter March 19, 2025, at 8:15 a.m. Before: 8 bags.
After cover cropping and ripping: 17 bags. "I used extra to pay school fees," she said. Her children now eat soy-fortified pap from her surplus. She rents a ripper with three neighbours. Her soybeans were aggregated under a climate-smart grains programme.
From pilot to platform: According to TechnoServe, StreFaS — Strengthening Farmers and SMEs Resilience through Climate-Smart Grain Production — is a three-year initiative funded by AGRA and Nestlé that will run from June 2024 to October 2027.
The program aims to support 25,000 smallholder farmers and eight aggregators across Kaduna and Nasarawa States, promoting sustainable production of maize, soybean, rice and sorghum.
The figures published by TechnoServe, StreFaS had engaged 12,373 farmers, established 270 demonstration farms and supported adoption of regenerative practices across 1,853 hectares. It had also aggregated 74,223.53 metric tonnes. Young people accounted for 40 per cent.
Using FAO mid-rate of 0.5 tonnes carbon per hectare, 1,853 hectares store an estimated 926 tonnes of carbon — equivalent to removing about 200 cars for a year. That is adaptation and mitigation together.
Target is 80,000 metric tonnes annually. Global companies now target 50% regenerative sourcing by 2030 to cut Scope 3 emissions. Bottleneck visible: ripper rental scarce, eight aggregators for two states. Farmers at Zaria ask Kaduna State Government and Federal Ministry of Agriculture to subsidize ripper rental and scale demonstration farms.
Then market paid. According to Agronigeria July 6, 2026 and New Telegraph July 10, 2026, farmers who implemented minimum tillage, cover cropping, agroforestry, mulching and soil testing in 2025 received premium payments at International Day of Desertification and Drought in Zaria, organised by TechnoServe with AGRA and Nestlé.
Farm to plate link is direct. BusinessDay reports one major food company sources 80 percent of its maize, sorghum, millet, soya, cassava starch, cocoa powder and palm olein from more than 41,600 local farmers.
The company is replacing imported corn starch with cassava starch, according to Reuters June 26, 2023. Local sourcing kept factories running when forex crisis hit.
The audited filing at Nigerian Exchange February 29, 2024, revenue was N547.1 billion in 2023. Factories at Agbara and Flowergate ran at about 95% capacity because local sourcing kept lines running, according to CEO briefing March 1, 2024.
In the dusty field, the soil still blows away. In Aisha's field next to it, it holds water for three days. That difference is now school fees, factory running, carbon stored. Soil learned to hold water. Zaria taught it.
