President John Dramani Mahama has begun his #ResettingGhana tour of the Ahafo Region with an inspection of two newly constructed Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in the Tano North Municipality.
The facilities, located in the farming communities of Ahyiaem and Nsuapemkrom, are equipped with medical supplies and residential quarters for health workers.
Addressing chiefs and residents during brief durbars in the communities, President Mahama said the projects formed part of his administration’s efforts to expand access to healthcare and improve service delivery at the community level.
"These were built from proceeds of the District Assemblies Common Fund. As a policy, I have directed all MMDCEs to construct two CHPS compounds, two classroom blocks, and a 24-hour economy market. These projects will be distributed across different communities within their respective districts," he noted.
The President said the construction of the facilities was made possible by his administration’s decision to uncap the District Assemblies Common Fund and allocate 80 per cent of the funds directly to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), instead of centralising the resources in Accra.
He also assured residents that patients who visit the CHPS compounds would receive free treatment under the government’s Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
During the visit to Ahyiaem, the Dormaahemaa, Odeneho Dr Akosua Fima Dwaben II, expressed appreciation to the President for the development initiatives being undertaken in the area.
President Mahama was accompanied on the tour by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga; the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare; the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku; and the Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
Also present were Ahafo Regional Minister Charity Gardiner, the Municipal Chief Executive, regional and district directors of health services, and local healthcare workers.
