President John Dramani Mahama has announced Government’s plans to import rechargeable electric wheelchairs for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
He explained that the pilot project was to facilitate the movement of PWDs and that when the electric wheelchairs were in, they would be handed over to the National Council on Disability.
The President made the revelation during his Citizens’ Engagement in Goaso at the end of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Ahafo Region.
He reiterated that when the pilot project was successfully executed, it would be replicated annually.
He said previously three per cent of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) was allocated to PWDs.
However, his administration had increased the allocation to five per cent.
President Mahama said the Persons With Disability Act, 2006, which seeks to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities, would be amended as part of efforts to enhance their living conditions.
With regards to health, President Mahama said the Government implemented the Free Primary Healthcare Programme to provide free healthcare for the people.
He said the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) was established to reduce the disease burden of the high cost of medical treatment cancers and dialysis.
