The newly elected National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abanga Fusani Yakubu, has stated that he is targeting 70 “orphan” parliamentary seats for the party in the 2028 general elections.
He said the target forms part of his strategy to help the NPP recover parliamentary seats lost in the 2024 elections and return to power.
The NPP currently holds about 87 parliamentary seats after losing 49 seats from its 137 seats in the 2020 elections after the 2024 elections.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews' PM Express show on Tuesday, October 6, the NPP Youth Leader said, “I mean business. I have a strategy that I am bringing on board."
He explained that the 70-seat target would focus on constituencies where the NPP has a strong historical presence but lost due to what he described as specific challenges.
Abanga cited Adansi Asokwa and Ayawaso West Wuogon as some of the constituencies he believes the party can reclaim with the right candidate and a united party structure.
He said the selection of parliamentary candidates would therefore be critical to achieving the target, although he declined to disclose the details of the strategy he intends to use.
Similarly, the leadership of the opposition party has also hinted at strategies to select candidates who can win them seats in the upcoming 2028 general elections.

When I read such statements, it makes me fully understand that the NPP is far from reality. While Ghanaians are asking for accountability, they are talking about power and capturing seats. You will be shocked when your seats reduce to nothing.
