Ayalolo buses to operate contra-flow lanes on Amasaman, Adenta and Kasoa routes from Tuesday 

The government will introduce a contra-flow arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major corridors into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) from Tuesday, September 29.

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in collaboration with MTTD, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), is implementing the arrangement.

The arrangement will operate during peak morning hours from 6am to 9am and in the evening from 4pm to 8pm.

The intervention will cover the Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra corridors as part of efforts to improve public transport, reduce congestion and provide more reliable mobility for commuters.

“The arrangement will take effect from Tuesday, 29th September 2026. The intervention forms part of Government's broader efforts to improve public transportation, reduce congestion and provide more reliable and efficient mobility for commuters travelling into and out of Accra's Central Business District," a statement issued on Monday read in part.

Under the arrangement, selected sections of the three corridors will be temporarily configured to allow authorised Ayalolo BRT buses to travel in the priority direction against the normal flow of general traffic.

The designated contra-flow lanes will be reserved strictly for Ayalolo BRT operations, with private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users prohibited from using them.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service will provide traffic control and enforcement support at strategic locations and major intersections along the affected corridors.

“The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will provide operational traffic control and enforcement support along the affected corridors at strategic locations and major intersections," the statement noted.

Government said the intervention is expected to ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD, encourage greater use of mass public transportation and reduce pressure from large volumes of private vehicles.
