CNN, Politico and MS NOW Sue Trump After White House Ban, as His Fight With the Media Escalates ‎

Three major news organisations, CNN, MS NOW and Politico, sued the Trump administration on Monday after their reporters were barred from the White House. The move opens a new front in President Donald Trump's long confrontation with the press.

The ban and the lawsuit
Reporters from the three outlets said they were prevented from entering the White House grounds after Trump announced plans to ban them. Trump said the outlets had intentionally reported "fake news."

In a Truth Social post, he called it a cancer, said it was a threat to national security and "must be stopped, NOW." He also indicated that other outlets could follow.

In a joint statement, the organisations said they were suing to protect their First Amendment rights and to defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes.

They said the White House revoked their journalists' credentials without notice or process because it objected to their reporting. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, alleges Trump imposed the ban because he dislikes the content of their coverage.

A pattern of legal and political pressure
The clash follows a run of legal actions against media companies. Trump has filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC over the edit of a 2024 speech documentary, and the two sides appointed a former judge for mediation.

He has also filed a $15 billion defamation suit against The New York Times, launched legal actions or threats against The Wall Street Journal, and secured financial settlements from networks, including ABC News and a $16 million settlement from CBS's parent company over a "60

Minutes" interview.
His allies say such settlements are deserved, while critics call them ransom or bribes. They also argue that parent companies are bowing to pressure and selling out their own journalists.

What to watch
The court will have to decide whether barring reporters over their coverage violates the First Amendment. Press-freedom groups have warned for years about Trump's hostility to the media.

RSF said in 2024 that he posed an existential threat to journalists' ability to do their work. Trump's supporters argue that outlets have treated him unfairly and spread false stories. Both views will now be tested in court.
