Türkiye has moved from watching to positioning itself as Yemen's Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia trade increasingly heavy attacks. Ankara's worries combine a new defence pledge, threatened trade routes and its expanding presence in Africa.
The escalation
The Houthis declared what they called a complete naval blockade on Saudi Arabia and intensified missile and drone attacks on Saudi oil tankers. The Houthis are also pressing gains that have brought large stretches of the Red Sea coast, including the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, under their control.
At a UN Security Council emergency meeting, officials said the risk of a return to large-scale conflict had become a "harsh reality."
Reason 1: A defence pact
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Saudi Arabia may have unmet military needs and that Türkiye would consider how to support it under a trilateral defence pact that also includes Pakistan. Türkiye has yet to ratify the pact, expected in October, and a Turkish official said Riyadh had not formally requested help. The pact raises the risk of Ankara being drawn into a confrontation.
Reason 2: Supply lines to Africa
Analysts warn a confrontation could disrupt the Red Sea routes that sustain Türkiye's military and energy ambitions in Africa. One researcher said Bab al-Mandeb is a gateway to China, India and East Africa, and that the direct line between Ankara and Mogadishu would be affected while Somali piracy is rising again.
Ankara is expanding its engagement in the Horn of Africa, and its parliament recently approved a two-year extension of its military mission in Somalia.
Reason 3: Being a target
Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi warned that aircraft Türkiye sold to Saudi Arabia would become "unsellable stock" once shot down in Yemen. In 2024, the Houthis targeted a Turkish vessel with ballistic and naval missiles.
A balancing act
Ankara condemned the blockade threat and voiced solidarity with Riyadh, but is likely to avoid direct participation in a broader confrontation unless it is directly threatened. Türkiye is among 14 countries that signed the founding statement of a Saudi-led maritime defence coalition to protect shipping through Bab al-Mandeb.
